Wednesday

Wednesday,

I awoke at 4:30 but did not get up till after 5:00 am. The sky not perfectly clear had cloud to the south and west.

The walk started with the chirping of the Robin, announcing the morning. The smell of wood smoke and quiet sounds of the morning.

It continued to the village this time, to see the water going down the damn. It was beautiful. The sound of the power of the water hit you as you entered the outskirts of the village. The large chunks of ice caught up in fallen trees and branches of the winter. The roaring water over the rocks slamming into the snow/ice covered side walls.

Yet, across the road, the calm flowing water slowing making its way down to the damn. It flowed so peacefully from under the railway bridge. Its like it transforms into this monster water ride, from under the road bridge. Was that a beaver I see pushing against the current.......no, just a stick caught up in the mud. Such peace.

On the return home, the eastern sky was on fire. The salmon pink colour entwined in the grey ashen clouds. The flaming colour of orange and yellow streaked across the sky along the long arms of low lying clouds. The large old elm tree standing dark against the flamming sky.

The creek by the end of the road, moved quickly, a small clone of the larger river only 1/100th the size but still the sound of the water was strong and quick flowing.

Yes, everything is good in the neighbourhood.

As I returned home, I had missed the brown bunny at the bird feeder, but the indoor cats got to see the bunny and they were all excited and came to meet me at the door to let me know of their adventure.

Emotional day

Its been an emotional day so far, and I have only been awake for less that two hours.

It started around 4:00 am when I woke up. My mind drifting into family gatherings, and good times and laughs, and how now that is in the distant path. How I yearn to have it again. I miss my daughter being home and having her here, and how she has these family gatherings with her Dad's new family, in a way I am jealous, but its the way it is.

But I do cherish the times we do have together one on one, the laughs and talking and babeling about anything. I will tell her this.

I thought of life in the future, when one day she may have children and if I will be left out on the sidelines, because she may want her child in a more family atmosphere.

Of course these are all conjectured thoughts, nothing is certain, and why do I put myself through these tortureous thoughts.

I am reading a book called "The secret life of bees", maybe I am alot like Lilly , more than I know it.

I got up and walked around, looked outside and the moon was setting in the west, and Jupiter high in the sky.

I went back to bed, and laid there trying to close my eyes and calm my troubled soul.

The alarm went off, the eastern sky getting lighter, and the music from the radio played in the background.

Time to rise and greet the day. I dressed, and decided the cool air is what I needed to get rid of the sad, negative feelings that started my day.

As I opened the door, the pleasant chirp of birds greeted me good morning. I walked on and nestled in the tree across the road was a robin, greeting everyone good morning. It is truly spring, the Robins are back.

I walked on, and the shovel that was frozen in the bank of ice yesterday, was now lying on the ground. The crows cawing high in the trees. The corner fence had been knocked down in the winter, as the pieces lay in the yard of a neighbour and the broken young tree took the brunt of the blow.

The creek is running and the ice further down the way, had melted to show icicles hanging on a snow bank over the running cold water. The sound, the sound of cold water running and pulsing down the way moving fast to get to is destination. I wonder what the water at the Yarker damn looks like.....maybe tommorrows walk will reveal that marvelous site.

As I walked back, and watched the sun creep ever higher and glow a golden crimson colour , I looked in the west and saw the only evidence of night time, Jupiter, hang in the sky , slowly being wrapped in the earths shadow.

Life goes on, as it should, and whether it is phylisophical or not, enjoy the simple things, the simple pleasures in life. The universe is unfolding as it should......and we are all star stuff.

Mellow Morning

Its been over three months since I walked the early morning route in our neighbourhood, and nothing much changed over the winter months.

The smell of wood smoke in the air, smelled a bit like hickory, or maybe that was my desire to start the smoker up in the back yard.

The stars fading way, Antares the heart of Scorpius in the south was fading, Jupiter hung like a jeweled bobble in the west, and the Summer Triangle with Cygnus fading fast over the zenith.

At -10C it as was wonderful morning, crisp, and clear.

The critters still hibernating, and not evident.

As I was walking back home, the eastern sky looked as if someone had poured a bottle of Rose as the sky flowed with a light crimson red. The sun was rising to kiss the world good morning.

All is well in the neighbourhood.............

Later on the sun was rising, and sitting in the bird feeder in the north as small bird, eating its breakfast and waiting to greet the morning.

The snow and ice may be on the ground, but spring is in the air and pushing winter out the door.

Happy Spring to all, as it will arrive on Sunday!

One Eye Open

Vega, it taunts you.

As I awoke at 4:50 am, Vega it taunted me, looking at me through the bedroom window, calling me.....its clear out, come out and see us.

Well, how could I resist that, clear after what seemed like an eternity of cloud.

Dressed for the cold, as it was -13C outside, observing log in hand, portable telescope to be remounted in the observatory, and solar log book too boot(just getting prepared), I headed off to the observatory.

Just a dusting of snow on the ground, and a clear sky above, what more could you ask for, it was a breath taking.

Well, as all good intentions go, the lock was frozen shut, yanking several times, even with several applications of lock deicer this did not work, so I gave up going inside the observatory. I went in and got the binoculars and sat on the ground to observe. One was not giving up the chance to observe.

In the short 1 hour that I was outside, I had observed 2 satellites, names unknown , just circling our globe. There were 3 meteors, the first at the zenith going west to east , very fast, the second a short fast one in the summer triangle going west to east, and the third a long slow white, yellow mag -2 meteor that stretched from east to west across the zenith. Checking with the meteor sources, these may have been a couple of showers that are current right now, like the The Coma Berenicids (COM), which may have been the 3rd meteor I seen. The first two either were from the Anthelion radiant or sporadics.

I observed three planets, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, with binoculars, Mercury and Venus were still below the horizon.

While looking at Saturn the Bee Hive Open Cluster M44 naked eye and dazzled in binoculars. Gee I wonder if I have that one in my messier count.

By 6:00 am, the transparency was starting to go, but it was so nice to just stand and look up and see the many stars, constellations, and wonders of the morning sky.

Oh, when we got home last night, I could not help but go out and find the comet (Comet Machholz). It was around 2.5 bincular fields north of the Pleiades. It was bright, and the tail could be seen pointing to the SW, very broad tail though. I can hardly wait for tonight, and see it in the Venor.

Well, I hope that I may have enticed you a bit to go out and look up tonight. Can't wait to see what Planetary Nebula that Ken will have us looking at.

till later, clear skies, and keep looking up.

Ice Rain on Sunday

Its Sunday, and the Storm warnings have been coming through all day.

It has been ice raining since this morning around 10:00 am, and now the wind is picking up.

We are looking at the bird feeder, which has a sloped cover on it, and the ice rain has trickled down and has almost attached itself to the base, looking like ice bars.

Watching movies and updating websites all day, a time for new changes and beginnings.

More later.........

January 1,2005 Happy New Year

Happy New Year Everyone,

It has been an excellent day so far.

Up early this morning, observing the 5 planets (Venus, Mercury,Mars, Saturn and Jupiter) the moon, in its 20th day, a meteor and Iridium 90 at -6 magnitude.

Watched a movie, talked to Sara, had a few egg nogs with Apricot Brandy, have to finish the egg nog, and then some solar observing, while it was clear. The clouds have moved back in.

What a great way to start the year, relaxing and doing the things you enjoy.........observing the universe as it unfolds before you.
